🀄 Mahjong Solitaire for Kids – Match Emojis & Train Your Brain!

Mahjong Solitaire is one of the world's most popular tile-matching puzzles, and now kids can play it here at Puzzling Fun with colourful emoji tiles! Our version swaps the traditional Chinese character tiles for fun, friendly emojis that children of all ages can recognise and enjoy.

🌟 Fun fact: Mahjong Solitaire was invented in 1981 by Brodie Lockard while he was a computer science student. It was inspired by the ancient Chinese game of Mahjong but is actually a completely different type of puzzle!

🤔 What Is Mahjong Solitaire?

Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player matching game played with tiles stacked in layers. The goal is simple: remove all the tiles from the board by matching pairs of identical tiles.

The catch? You can only select tiles that are "free" — meaning they're not covered by another tile on top, and they have at least one open side (left or right). This means you have to plan ahead and think carefully about which pairs to remove first!

📋 How to Play Mahjong Solitaire – Step by Step

  1. Look at the board: Tiles are stacked in layers. Some tiles sit on top of others.
  2. Find free tiles: A tile is free if nothing is on top of it AND its left or right side is open.
  3. Tap a free tile: It will light up with a purple glow.
  4. Tap its matching pair: If you find another free tile with the same emoji, both tiles are removed!
  5. Clear the board: Keep matching pairs until every tile is gone. That's a win!
  6. Get stuck? Use the Hint button to highlight a match, or Shuffle to rearrange the remaining tiles.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Mahjong and Mahjong Solitaire?
Mahjong is a traditional Chinese game for 4 players. Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player matching puzzle inspired by the original tiles. They share a name but are quite different games!

Why can't I click some tiles?
Tiles that look slightly faded are "blocked." They either have another tile on top of them, or they're trapped between tiles on both their left and right sides. Free up the blocking tiles first!

What does Shuffle do?
Shuffle takes all the remaining tiles and randomly rearranges them in the same positions. This can get you unstuck without starting over!

Is every game possible to win?
Our puzzle generator builds every layout to be solvable, but the order you remove tiles matters. If you get stuck, try the shuffle button or start fresh!

Why emojis instead of traditional Mahjong tiles?
Traditional Mahjong tiles use Chinese characters and symbols that can be hard for kids to tell apart. Emojis are instantly recognisable, colourful, and fun — perfect for younger players!
