⛵ Battleship Puzzle for Kids – Find the Hidden Fleet!
Ahoy, puzzle fans! Have you ever played Battleship — the game where you try to guess where your opponent hid their ships? Well, Battleship Puzzle (also called Bimaru or Battleship Solitaire) takes that idea and turns it into an awesome logic puzzle that you solve all by yourself. No opponent needed — just your brain!
🤔 What Is a Battleship Puzzle?
A Battleship Puzzle is a single-player logic game played on a square grid. A fleet of ships is hidden somewhere on the board — your job is to figure out exactly where every ship is placed. The only clues you get are numbers along the edges of the grid that tell you how many ship segments are in each row and column.
Ships are always placed in straight lines — horizontally or vertically. They never touch each other, not even diagonally. Some cells might be revealed at the start to help you get going!
📋 How to Play – Step by Step
- Check the fleet. Look at the ships shown above the grid — these are the ships you need to find. Note their sizes and how many of each.
- Read the clues. The numbers along the top and left edges tell you how many ship segments are in that column or row.
- Start with certainties. If a row or column clue is 0, the entire row/column is water — tap those cells to mark them blue. If the clue equals the number of empty cells, they must all be ship!
- Place ships. Tap a cell to cycle through: empty → ship (amber) → water (blue) → empty again.
- Use logic. Ships can't touch diagonally, so cells diagonal to any ship segment must be water. Use this to eliminate possibilities!
- Match the fleet. Keep an eye on the fleet display — it shows how many ships of each size you've placed. When all ships are correctly found, you win!
💡 Top Tips for Kids
- Zero rows and columns first! Any row or column with a 0 clue is all water. Mark it immediately — it clears loads of space.
- Fill in forced rows. If a row has 5 spaces left and the clue is 5, every remaining cell must be a ship segment.
- Diagonal rule is your best friend. Every cell diagonally next to a ship MUST be water. This often reveals where other ships can and can't go.
- Count your segments. The clue numbers show ship segments, not whole ships. A 3-segment ship counts as 3 in its row/column clues.
- Work from both directions. Check rows AND columns together. A cell might look possible from its row clue, but impossible from its column clue.
- Use the hint button! Stuck? Tap hint to reveal one cell. It's a great way to learn new solving techniques.
🧠 Why Battleship Puzzles Are Great for Your Brain
Every time you solve a Battleship Puzzle, you're exercising real brain-training skills for kids:
- Spatial reasoning: Visualising where ships fit on a grid builds the same skills used in geometry and map reading.
- Deduction: You learn to eliminate impossible options step by step — just like a detective!
- Counting & arithmetic: Tracking row and column totals keeps your number skills sharp.
- Patience & focus: These puzzles reward careful, methodical thinking over guessing.
📐 Grid Sizes & Ships
Our Battleship Puzzle comes in three grid sizes to suit all skill levels:
- 6 × 6 (Beginner): A small fleet of 4 ships with 7 total segments. Great for learning the rules!
- 8 × 8 (Classic): A medium fleet of 6 ships with 13 segments. The sweet spot for a fun challenge.
- 10 × 10 (Expert): The full fleet of 10 ships with 20 segments — just like the classic puzzle magazines!
Each grid also has three difficulty levels. Easy puzzles reveal more starting cells so you've got lots to work with. Hard puzzles reveal very little — you'll need sharp logic to crack those!
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same as the Battleship board game?
Not exactly! The board game is a two-player guessing game. Battleship Puzzle is a single-player logic puzzle — you use number clues to deduce where the ships are hidden. No guessing required!
Can ships touch each other?
No! Ships can never touch — not even diagonally. Every ship must have at least one cell of water separating it from every other ship. This is one of the most important rules to remember.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes! Just tap cells to cycle through empty, ship, and water. The grid resizes to fit your screen perfectly.
Is Battleship Puzzle free?
Absolutely! No sign-ups, no downloads, no ads. It's completely free to play as many puzzles as you like.
